Using these prepleated circles will help save the time required to quadrant-fold circles in repetitive or multiple analysis. These filters also offer decreased overall filtration time because extra surface area is exposed; the normal slowdown of filtration speed due to the loading of particulate is postponed. The total loading capacity is increased as more filter area is available, and flow rate is maintained due to the reduction in filter paper contact with the funnel side.

Grade 2V (8µm) is widely used for general-purpose filtration. It has excellent particle retention and a good filtration speed and loading capacity.

Grade 113V (30µm) is a very thick and strong filter with creped surface for extremely high loading capacity, particularly in folded form, and has the fastest flow rate of any qualitative grade.

Grade 114V (25µm) is another strong filter with very fast flow rate, for the same applications as Grade 113V, but with a smooth surface. Either are ideal for coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates.

Whatman® Qualitative Filter Papers are available in a variety of grades, sizes, and shapes.

Grade 1: the most popular filter paper, available in circles from 1.0cm to 50cm, and sheets as large as 58.0cm x 68.0cm. Grade 1 exhibits medium retention and flow rate. Pore size: 11µm.

Grade 2: is slightly more retentive then Grade 1, with a corresponding increase in filtration time, due to a pore size of 8µm.

Grade 3: (6µm) has double the thickness of No. 1 with excellent loading capacity; more precipitate can be held without clogging. The extra thickness gives increased wet strength and makes this grade highly suitable for use in Büchner funnels. The high absorbency is particularly valuable when the paper is used as a sample carrier.

Grade 4: (20-25µm) provides extremely fast filtering with excellent retention of coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates such as ferric hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. Grade 4 is very useful as a rapid filter for routine cleanup of biological fluids or organic extracts during analysis.

Grade 5: (2.5µm) provides the maximum degree of fine particle filtration in the qualitative range. Capable of retaining the fine precipitates encountered in chemical analysis. Slow flow rate. Excellent clarifying filter for cloudy suspensions and for water and soil analysis.

Grade 6: (3µm) is twice as fast as No. 5 with almost as fine particle retention. Often specified for boiler water analysis applications.
